What is Performance Coaching?

It is helpful to describe what Performance coaching isn’t before moving into what it is. Performance coaching isn’t counselling, mentoring, skills training, therapy or life coaching. It isn’t about giving you answers to your difficult questions. It isn’t about solving your problems for you.

Performance Coaching is about creating powerful and lasting change in individuals. By assisting our clients in overcoming their internal barriers to change, we enable them to observe greater choices in their lives and in doing so take greater responsibility for their own outcomes. This often leads to changes in an individual’s mental focus and state of mind, which in turn has a direct effect on where they channel their energy and the results that they receive. Performance Coaching with Become is for any organisation or individual that wants to create powerful and lasting change to the performance of their business, career, or personal life.

Is this person really a coach, or just a consultant in disguise?
Consultants give you answers. A consultant is hired to bring “know how” into an organisation. Their role is to bring additional resources or intelligence to organisations for the purpose of achieving an organisational objective.

Therapist delivers therapy to a patient. In coaching we do not consider out clients as patients.

Coaches ask you the right questions to enable you to find the answers. A credible Performance Coach will ask you those questions which you may not have ever considered before, but once considered, provide insights that lead you to finding the answers you’ve been searching for. A coach is there to create the necessary experiences for you to be able to learn within your own environment the very things you need to learn to take you towards your outcome.  Coaching is a partnership that enables you to develop in a way that is in line with your belief, values and personality.

Are your sessions confidential?
To get the best results, you'll need to be completely honest with your coach. Look for a coach who insists on total confidentiality. Our policy is 100% client confidentiality unless otherwise agreed at the outset of the relationship.

What am I going to get out of Performance Coaching, that I would not be able to do myself?
Is there something in your life that you have not yet achieved…? Why not? Is there something in your life you are not entirely happy with…? Why have you not “fixed” it yet, so that you are entirely happy?

Your reason for coaching will determine what Performance Coaching will offer you. A coach is not there as a personal motivator but rather someone that helps you plot your way to your outcomes and provides you with the tools to ensure you get there. If you have any reason to think that you could be doing better or that you have been putting important things off or perhaps that there are issues that you have not addressed, then Performance Coaching will change this.

A coach will flatten out the peaks and the troughs and provide that invaluable outsiders perspective that enables you to see yourself as the world sees you and have an opportunity to change things that want to change. A coach takes you to places where you need to find answers to the most difficult questions you will ever ask yourself and beyond.

Does the coaching program match my needs?
An initial diagnostic of your coaching needs will be conducted before we agree to work together. In this diagnostic your needs will be address and your reasons for wanting coaching will be discussed.  This initial conversation is time well spent clarifying expectations and needs right from the outset.

We also take into consideration that your life is dynamic and filled with responsibilities. Your coach should be competent in conducting sessions both face to face and over the phone. This way your busy schedule is not burdened but supported. This means you can get the most out of the coaching whilst not having to offload something to fit the coaching in. This flexible style of either face to face or over the phone coaching is what Become offers.

However, we do not recognise email or other written communication as an effective means of coaching. It is a poor means of communication where the coach is not able to capture the sensory acuitiy cues given by the client to ensure that the real issues are dealt with.

How much does it cost?
Don’t be afraid once you know what the coaching consists of and how you will benefit from it to ask, "What's your fee?". Be mindful however that you cannot judge all coaching firms based on price. You want to strike a balance between the meeting of your needs, value for money and ensuring that you are receiving coaching from a properly qualified professional.

How long does it take?
Performance coaching by its very nature is about enabling optimum performance within a given area/s. So during the assessment phase the objectives are set and appropriate measures are identified. From here a suitable timeframe will be developed but generally, unlike executive coaching the timeframes are shorter and the client is encouraged to decide when they are ready to finish a cycle and also encouraged to return regularly on a needs basis. This way a co-dependent relationship is not established which goes against what coaching is about. Coaching prepares individuals to deal with all manner of situations effectively on their own.

When it comes to coaching there has to be movement or both parties are wasting their time. This movement should begin in the first session or just thereafter. Performance Coaching gets results quickly and builds the momentum with each session. Clients will make a series of changes building a chain of success and their own momentum.

What results have people had?

Our clients have all achieved results in a variety of different areas of their lives. It would be impossible to list them all here, but a quick sample would include:

  • Gained the skills to be a influential and respected leader
  • Achieved the career advancement opportunity that previously the client had worked towards for two years but not achieved. Within four months of coaching he was offered a role that was above the role he originally hoped for.
  • After being told he was at risk of heart disease this client lost a significant amount of body fat and for the first time ever at age 45 joined a gym and made exercise and health a major part of his life.
  • Discovered how she could have a family, an intimate relationship and head up a successful company.

We recommend you see the testimonials that scroll on the top of the main pages that clients have prepared for Become. We also have many happy clients who are willing to talk to you over the phone to share their success with you.

Should Organisations use internal coaches or external coaches?
A coach external to your business brings an independent view, offers complete confidentiality, an unbiased approach and brings to the coaching program a greater level of integrity and trust.

Whilst the term coach is used quite widely there is a big difference in what a “coach” is depending on who you talk to. Many organisations are now running coach training internally and we agree this is better than not doing any coaching at all. However, Become Performance coaches are trained in the most powerful humanistic change and enhancement practices known, this type of expertise is clearly a different offering to someone who has undergone a short training in coaching. The very best Performance Coaches are experienced and qualified and naturally they deliver the kinds of outcomes consistent with this.

The three major reasons for using an external coach:
    1. Greater objectivity and integrity
    2. Superior coaching skills
    3. Better return on investment based on unsurpassed results
